Oct. 6, 2025
As the weather turns colder, night draws in, leaves turn golden and pumpkins start to glow, it's the perfect time for some seasonal reading. October is made for mystery, magic and a few spooky thrills - so step inside Serial Mash and see what this season's readings has in store...
Serial Mash is the online library brought to you by 2Simple. It's full of over 250 books written especially for primary-aged children. With seven different libraries and fun reading activities included, there's something for all children.
Serial Mash can be added on to Purple Mash, or used as a standalone to help promote a love of reading or for guided reading lessons in class.
There's something special about reading stories that match the time of year. Just like adults love a festive novel at Christmas or a beach read in Summer, children will connect more with books that reflect the world around them. Seasonal stories help reading feel timely, relevant and exciting - a fun part of everyday life rather than a task to complete for school.
In October, spooky stories are great fun, capturing the atmosphere of darkening evenings, pumpkins on doorsteps and a hint of mystery in the air.
Studies from the National Literacy Trust and the DfE's Reading for Pleasure report show that when reading materials feel relevant and connected to children's lives - like spooky stories in October - they're more likely to pick up a book for fun.
