Run an easy after-school Coding Club with Mash Club

Save time and stress by using our Mash Club for your extra-curricular club. Mash Club is an after-school (or maybe even lunchtime) computing club aimed at Year 2 - 6 students with three terms of 8 self-guided sessions, where your students will learn to code and blog.

What is included in Mash Club?

Mash Club currently includes 8 self-guided sessions for three school terms. Some of the Mash Club sessions could be spread over more than one club session if needed.

The sessions include slideshows and printable step-by-step instructions for children to follow. These include images and screenshots so that children are able to easily see what they need to do.

Inside the Mash Club folder, you'll also find a poster, and certificates, as well as a guide. There are also stickers and name cards: for each session that they attend, budding coders and bloggers receive a new sticker.

Mash Club, and all the resources and tools needed to complete it, is included as part of a Purple Mash subscription. You can try it out with a free trial.

What will children learn at Mash Club?

Through the course of the first term of Mash Club, students will use the Purple Mash tools 2Code and 2Blog. In the second term, they will also explore 3D shapes and design using the Purple Mash tool 2Design and Make. There are also activities incorporating micro:bits, designed for learners to learn the benefits of and make connections to external devices.

Mash Club Term 1

Within 2Code, students will learn to use:

• Collision detection
• Timers
• 'if' statements
• Repetition
• Variables
• Objects
• Tabs
• Functions

They will also:

• Debug and improve their code
• Create game areas
• Consider designing for different device types
• Design graphics
• Storyboard
• Work as part of a team

Within 2Blog, students will learn to:

• Write a blog
• Add links on blogs
• Comment on blogs
• Evaluate and comment constructively
• Respond positively to constructive comments

Mash Club Term 2

Children will use 2Code to:

• Add backgrounds and objects
• Clone objects
• Sequence code
• Use Collisions, Variables and Functions
• Debug code
• Use timers

With 2Design and Make they will:

• Explore the panels
• Add additional points
• Decorate faces of 3D object
• Save, print and download
• Combine nets

They will use micro:bits to:

• Explore micro:bit features
• Use micro:bit buttons
• Use variables
• Create sounds
• Send a program to the device
• Use gestures
• Create a musical octave

How do I access Mash Club?

Mash Club is free to Purple Mash subscribers, and can be found either in the Teacher's Area, or in the DigiTech folder.
